At B Lab AANZ, our role includes advocating for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative system—one that acknowledges historical truths and actively works to dismantle systemic injustices. Part of that is being willing to reflect on the structures we uphold and the stories we tell—including the significance of January 26.
Although Australia often prides itself on being a diverse and inclusive society, continuing to celebrate on January 26 disregards the voices and lived experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. That’s why we’re supporting Aboriginal social enterprise (and B Corp) Clothing The Gaps’ Not a Date to Celebrate campaign—reflecting our commitment to recognising the ongoing impacts of colonisation on First Nations people.
We can and should celebrate what we now know collectively as Australia, but we can’t do it without honouring and including the traditional custodians of the lands we love.
The way we see it, this is an opportunity for all of us to live our values and contribute to systemic change—recognising that the systems we operate within weren’t designed to benefit all, and that better business means questioning the status quo.
If you’re exploring how your business can acknowledge the day differently, Clothing The Gaps has created resources to support reflection and action, including:
A free Not A Date To Celebrate poster to download and display
A guide on substituting the public holiday
Articles on the history and impact of this date and ways to show solidarity
We encourage this community of purpose-led businesses to use their platforms and influence in ways that contribute to a more inclusive, equitable future—not just on this day, but every day.
